Government Activity

The Chlorine Institute is actively engaged in the regulatory process and to support members on issues that affect the chlor-alkali industry.  The Product Stewardship Issue Team primarily monitors and participates in issues related to the EPA's Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), and Clean Water Act (CWA).  For regulatory information pertaining to fixed facilities, transportation, and emergency preparedness, refer to CI's other Issue Team webpages. 

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Many members of the Institute are Registrants involved in the manufacture, sale, and distribution of pesticide products.




CI Mission Chemicals chlorine and sodium hypochlorite are the most widely used drinking water disinfectants in North America. In addition, acids and alkalines are used for important pH balance.

Many members of the Institute hold NPDES Permits and are subject to compliance obligations under the Clean Water Act. In addition, CI Mission Chemicals play an important role in wastewater disinfection and pH balance.
