Tom Stevens - The Greenbrier Companies

Member Spotlight,

April Member Spotlight - Tom Stevens (The Greenbrier Companies)

I: Tell us a little about yourself, and what you do.

I am a Mechanical Engineer with The Greenbrier Companies. I started out in 2010 as a Project Engineer within the Tank Car Engineering group and I am currently the Project Engineering Supervisor for this same group in St. Charles, MO. The best aspect of my career is being able to work with customers to solve challenges they have and deliver a product that exceeds those expectations.

CI: When did you first become involved at CI? What activities have you been involved in at CI?

I have been a member of the Chlorine Institute on the Transportation team since 2015 and have been on several task force groups. I’ve been on the Transportation Issue Team since 2017.

CI: What is something interesting about you that few would know or guess?

I haven’t always been in the rail industry. Right out of college I worked in the medical industry for a cataract surgical device company, but our division was sold, and ultimately, I landed in the rail industry.

CI: Tell us about your favorite CI memory or success story.

The first thing that comes to mind is this; working with and seeing the excellent job that Robyn Kinsley does as leader of the Transportation Issue Team, is the key factor in the success of our team. We are successful due to the strength of the team and our leader.

CI: What do you value most from your CI membership?
To be part of a team, whose primary goal is to protect people through the safe transportation and handling of hazardous chemicals. Through the efforts of all those in CI, this goal has been achieved and with successful results.

CI: What advice do you have for early career professionals in the chlor-alkali industry?

“Get Involved” is a common reply to this, and something CI recommends, because it is true. As you start out, if you don’t know – just ask. Either the CI staff or its members will be happy to guide you.
